Installing Google Analytics on your Website

Step 1 – Login

  • Log into Google Analytics with your Google Account
  • Click on “Start Measuring”

Step 2 – Set up your Account

  • Setup your Account by following the instructions.
    • I named my account after my business/brand.
    • The account can hold many properties, so if you plan on installing Google Analytics on more sites or apps related to your business/brand, you can organize them under one account.
    • Leave the Account Data Sharing Settings checkboxes as is.
  • Click “Next”

Step 3 – Set up your Property

  • A property represents a business’s web and/or app data. An account can contain one or more properties.
  • I named my property after my website.
  • Set the Reporting time zone and currency to your appropriate location. For example, since I live in Columbia, Missouri my time zone is Chicago and I would like to use the US Dollar as my currency.
  • Click “Next”

Step 4 – Complete the Business Information section

  • Complete the Business Information section
    • Industry Category (what industry do you serve?)
    • Business Size (how many people are employed by your business?)
    • How do you intend to use Google Analytics with your business?
      • Check these items:
        • Measure customer engagement with my site or app
        • Optimize my site or app experience
        • Measure data across multiple devices or platforms
        • Optimize my advertising cost
        • Increase my conversions
        • Measure content monetization
        • Measure lead generation
  • Click “Create”

Step 5

  • Read the “Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement”
  • Check the box
  • Click “I Accept”
  • Check which email communications you would like to receive from Google. These will not affect how Google tracks your site.

Step 6 – Start Collecting Data

  • On the “Start Collecting Data” page, click “Web”
  • Begin setting up your data stream
    • Enter the domain of your website under “Website URL”
    • Set the “Stream Name” to be the same domain.
  • Click “Create Stream”

Step 7 – Web Stream Details

  • You will be brought to “Web Stream Details” and then Installation instructions will appear.
    • Click on “Install Manually” and copy the code.
  • Go to the backend of your website.

Step 8 – Installing the Code

  • Click on “General Settings” in the sidebar on the backend of your website
  • Under “Theme General Settings” scroll down to the text field that says “GA Tag”
  • Paste your Google Analytics code you just copied here.
  • Scroll up to the top of the General Setting page and click the blue “Update” button in the top right corner.
  • Once the information is updated, hover over the “WP Rocket” tab at the top of the page.
    • Select and click “Clear and preload cache”
    • This resets your site’s cache to ensure it now recognizes the Google Analytics change.
  • Return to Google Analytics

Step 9 – Confirmation

  • In Google Analytics, close out of the Web Stream Details and Installation Instruction windows.
  • Refer to the icon menu on the far left of the screen and hover over the one that looks like a graph. This link leads you to “Reports”
  • Click on “Reports”
  • Click on “Realtime”
  • This will lead you to a map and data of everyone on your website at the moment.
    • A little blob should appear in your city on the map. That’s you!
    • This lets you know Google Analytics is tracking on your website!
  • Give yourself a high-five – you just set up Google Analytics on your website!
